Attaching fence posts

Position

A brick wall will have a concrete foundation, which will make it difficult to sink fence posts into the ground. That means you’ll need to fix your fence posts to the wall itself. Using your fence panels as a guide, work out where your fence posts need to be. Use a spirit level to make sure they are vertical, and mark their position on the wall. Make sure they’re not touching the ground so that they don’t soak up moisture. Coating the back of your fence posts with preservative is also a good idea. This will help to stop moisture being absorbed where the post sits against the brickwork.

Drilling

If you’re using bolts to fasten them, mark the position of the bolts on the fencepost. (Make sure your bolts are going into brick and not into mortar). Drill your marks to a depth of about 10mm using a 25mm bit. This way your bolts will sit flush when fitted. Then drill straight through your marks with a 10mm auger. Place your post against the position you’ve marked on the wall. Using the holes in the fence post as a guide, use a masonry bit to drill into the brick. Attach the fence posts with your bolts.

Brackets

Wood fence post brackets are an ideal option when attaching fence panels to a brick wall. Brackets offer one of the most secure and rigid fence post fixings. Galvanised fence brackets are recommended, as they are more resistant to rust and corrosion. When using brackets, mark the position of your fence posts in the same way as described above. Then use a bracket as a template to mark the points on the brickwork where you need to drill. Attach the brackets using the recommended fixings. The final step is to attach the fence posts to the brackets.
