Before you begin the process to create or restore a deck stain, you should have the following in place:

  • Painter’s Tape
  • Garden Hose or Pressure Washer
  • Angled Brooms
  • Scrub Brush
  • Belt Sander with 80-grit Sandpaper
  • Paint Brushes
  • Paint Roller Frames and Extensions

  • Paint Thinners

  • Ultimate Decking Stain for the best decking stain in the UK

1. Check the Deck

Before you start staining your deck, check to see if any previous stains are still working well. If you lightly wet the wood and the water remains on the surface after ten minutes then the old stain is still working well. If the wood absorbs the water, you will need to stain as soon as possible. Try to stain on clear days between 10-30°C at times where sunlight is not directly hitting the deck. Finally, choose Ultimate Decking Stain for the best decking stain in the UK. Ultimate Decking Stain adds extra protection to your deck and will last twice as long as regular woods stains, making it the best choice.

2. Begin Preparations

First, remove any objects and furnishings from the deck and inspect it for any damage. Remove any previous finishes with Ronseal Decking Stripper. Once you have made any urgent repairs sand away any splintered areas with your belt sander and sandpaper. Protect wood ends with Ronseal Decking End Grain Protector. Brush any dust with the scrub brush and broom. Cover any nearby plants to prevent any of the stain from reaching them.

3. Clean the Deck

First, scrub the deck thoroughly using Ronseal Decking Cleaner and Reviver. Once the cleaner has soaked into the wood rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer. Wait for at least two days before applying your stain.

4. Check Railings and Features

Make sure any nearby structures and features are protected with painter’s tape before staining, such as your home’s siding. Sweep away any debris that may have settled on the surface. Prepare the Ultimate Decking Stain by stirring it thoroughly and pouring it into a paint tray. Test on a patch of wood to make sure it is suitable, then begin applying it to higher features such as railings and posts with long, even brush strokes.

5. Stain the Deck

Apply two coats of Ultimate Decking Stain to the deck boards using long and even strokes. Make sure to brush in between cracks and hard to reach areas as well. Also, ensure that you will be able to exit the deck upon completion without touching the wet stain. Once you have finished, wash the brushes and tray and allow them to dry for at least 24 hours. When complete, you can use bold decking paint to create the deck stain colours you prefer.
